BIO
Julia Mior Rugs is a textile design and weaving studio based around the production of rugs and other hand tufted textiles. Craft practices meeting fine art embrace the utilitarian in these hand-crafted pieces. Julia Mior Rugs create unique, original work for commercial retail as well as private and public commission.

Julia Mior is based in Vancouver, BC whose practice spans product, craft, and art. She uses weaving to delve into the realm of the domestic within the visual arts. In the world of technology and instant gratification, Julia slows down and creates work that invites comfort while examining the female imprint within craft and art.

The subjects and themes acknowledge the deep seeded history of women-made textiles and the gender power dynamics that have progressed through craft history. Compositions give a nod to painting traditions in their directional, almost canvas-based format while still embracing pattern and the decorative. Julia’s characters are plump with references from Matisse to Tracey Emin, with a nod to the perspectives inspired by Kazimir Malevich that give new direction and power to the gaze.

Julia is a process-based artist who is deeply invested in the material. She holds a Bachelors of Fine Art in painting from Emily Carr University of Art and Design, as well as a Studio Arts Diploma from Capilano University in Vancouver.

Julia has exhibited her work in showrooms in Vancouver and New York City.
